This complete kit comes with many different ways to stick it to a car, bike, helmet no worries there. It is easy to set up and change between options. I have only used mine a few times so far but I am very happy with the picture, the stability, the audio, the size and how easy it was to put on my helmet. The HD (1080 setting) is wide screen only. The only thing that can be a hic-up is that it only records in the MP4 format which limits the video editing programs that can support it. I went out and purchased a video transfer program. It converts one format to another. There are some very good software programs out there that are under $50. Many give you a trial period too. I plan onusing this unit for many years ahead and take care of it between each use. I give it an A+ so far and I found my best deal here on
I have been playing with this camera for the last couple of weeks and I have been really impressed with all of it’s features and awesome video quality. The GoPro has a bunch of different settings to play with and is very easy to figure out how to use. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for great quality and ease of use.
This thing is great! I used it on a recent MTB trip and was amazed at how well it handled the transitions from shady tree cover to sunny open fields. The camera responds very quickly adjusting for the lighting conditions. I’ve also used it on my car when racing and it takes great high quality video. It’s very durable and easy to use.

Audio Excellence
We’ve invested more in the HD HERO2 camera’s sound system than most companies spend on their entire camera development. You’ll only be hearing the sounds of your experience, not the howl of the wind. How? Obsessive audio engineering and an understanding that good sound is as important as good video. The HD HERO2 also utilizes a 3.5mm stereo external mic input for professional sound quality.
Shockproof & Waterproof to 197′ (60m)
Proven in heavy surf from Hawaii to Tahiti, Southern Mexico to Northern California, HD HERO2 cameras can handle it thanks their highly engineered polycarbonate exoskeletal housing. Replacement lens kits & housings are available, so there’s little worry while going for glory – even while diving with sharks.

April 2012 – I’ve edited this review a few times, detailing the ups and downs of the Hero2. Turns out I had a defective unit. In my several contacts with the help in the forums never suggested this – it was not until I contacted customer service directly that this came up. I sent the camera in (the rep said they would “keep an eye out for it” – Yea, right! I thought) – I needed it back ASAP for a ski vacation is Steamboat. Well, it arrived back in my anxious hands 8 days later. They had it for less than three days – that’s impressive. The fastest turn-around for Canon has been four weeks.

The movie accompanying this review was is a time lapse shot at One frame every five seconds, 1145 photos. I reduced them in size, then used Quicktime Pro to make the movie. The extreme color shift towards the end is the camera automatically switching settings when it grew darker out.

So I used it every day for a week, plus every few days since then (When not shooting skiing, I shoot a lot of time-lapse.) No issues, no problems – the quality is stunning. I think my earlier complaints concerning customer service were due to the rush accompanying the Hero2 introduction.

I still have complaints with the Scuba aspect of the camera, plus I can’t even use it in our pond and produce usable results.

Underwater? The specs have an impressive “Waterproof to 197 feet.” Except the thing can’t actually shoot any usable underwater footage. How many snorkelers and SCUBA divers have purchased this thing, only to find out that EVERY video and photo are totally out of focus? The curved lens cover acts with the water to create a second lens – this shifts everything out of focus by about five feet! Since the camera has no manual focus, you’re stuck.
Style Name: OutdoorPackage Type: Standard Packaging
(Update 6/6/2012) GoPro finally released the new diving case which fixes the infamous underwater focus problem with the standard waterproof case after two years of long wait for some users. The diving case will cost $49 that is a great price, but it is extra. Anyway, all my comments regarding the underwater problem should not be a concern with the new diving case.(Update 5/21/2012) I got the new diving case from GoPro. Although it cannot attach any filter, it is still great. I like the lens cover that came with it too. I can also see tiny bid less fish-eye effect and wider angle on land. That is nice IMO. I am giving 4 stars because they have the fix now even though I needed to spend extra $49. The diving case is that good.
After all these issues / promises are solved and updated, I will give this product 5 starts.
1. (Fixed!!!)Underwater focus fix with Extra $49.
2. 127FOV and 90FOV for 720P as promised
3. Overheating issue and short battery life
4. Price is still too much for such low quality materials used in this product.
5. (Released!!!)This was not expected, but as they promised “Pro-tune” firmware update will be released in this summer, not in summer 2015 like the diving case that GoPro promised long time ago.
6. Bugs in low light videos, photos, and time lapse feature.
7. Hopefully this will get fixed with “Pro-tune” firmware, but Auto White Balance does not perform well underwater at all.
Quick Summary:
Hero2 is clearly better than the original HD Hero in many areas. The price difference is justifiable although $300 was bit too much for my wallet. I am still happy with the purchase. If you are choosing between Original HD Hero and Hero2, I would get Hero2 for better low light performce.
Hi guys, my review does not contain any sample footage. Go to Google or YouTube to find that because there are a gazillion of them. I won’t bore you with that. If you are a skier, boarder, wakeboarder, water skiier, whatever. They will have footage of all of it there for your specific use. And since there are SO MANY USES for this wonderful little machine, I won’t even try to cover that aspect; “application in sports”, you might call it. I WILL however focus on the build quality, design, and delightful experience of opening the box for the very first time, which is impressive in and of itself.
My review is on the quality of build and design, which is a 10/10, A+, best you could ask for, in my opinion.
This camera has the grace and design-sense of an Apple product. Whomever designed this must be passionate about build quality and design, because everything is great. From the minute you open the box, you are impressed with extra features and luxuries that you would not expect from a camera of this size. It’s an elegant design, easy for any person to use of any skill level.
I was extremely pleased with this camera, when I own Canon lenses that cost 10x as much money (yes, high end photography is expensive and good lenses go for $2000 to $3000– JUST FOR THE LENS!!). I actually cannot believe such an elegantly designed product can be had for under $300. Kudos to GoPro.

When buying electronics on the internet you never really know what you’re getting; sure the details of the device sound impressive but are they really, and is it the best deal possible with the constant progress in technology? (Hopefully this review will answer those questions.)
The Nikon Coolpix L26 is simply an excellent camera for an excellent price. 16 mega pixels make the photo clear and crisp; good for landscapes, amateur photography, and candid photos. The 5x Zoom is adequate and suits the camera very well. Best of all, the camera is very easy to use and because its battery operated all you need to do is insert the batteries and a memory card and you’re good to go
Received this camera about a month ago, and even though it is a point and shoot camera, there are a lot of options to learn, so I am taking the time to do just that! I actually read the instructions (downnloaded the PDF manual)and fleshing it out…the 3″ screen was the main draw to this camera, as was the price-under $120.00, and the simple controls that sit just right of the screen….also the fact I can use regular AA batteries and/or rechargeable…comes in 3 choices of finish-red, black or silver. Good documentation available…Nice camera for the price!
I truly deeply LOVE this camera; it is sooo easy to use and the quality is there. It even lets you select the final size of your photos in pixels. Uploading pictures is a PLEASURE, NOTHING COMPLICATED IN USING IT, unlike other digitals. It is truly a point and shoot camera! I take photos of fast moving puppies and it keeps up with them, no blurs! I recommend it to all! The price was more than worth it without having to spend thousand(s) of dollars. It is meant for the amateur photographer and is simply an absolute VERY TRUE JOY to use! I can’t say enough about this VERY excellent camera. Wish I had had it years ago, but maybe it would not be the excellent camera it is today! This is the VERY best digital camera I have ever used and meets all my needed requirements, especially for the puppies in picture taking! It replaces the KODAK cameras I have used over the last 11 years with Kodak now going out of business in this area anyway. I recommend it to all amateurs, well worth the money which is not that much.
I bought this camera to have something handy in my purse or pocket at all times. I food blog, I submit random shots to the local news and I like to take quick snapshots on the go when I find a cool craft or when I see a location that I might want to go back to with clients and take some REAL photos.
All my professional gear is Canon. I have Nikon cameras but I honestly prefer Canon because I like the color and sharpness I get with Canon and it just feels good in my hand.
Brand preference is a personal thing some people like Nikon better and I am fine with that I am not here to argue the Canon v.s. Nikon attributes.
What I like about this camera: It uses an SD card and if you will invest in a quality SD card that has some speed to it you will be happy because the faster the photos load to the card, the shorter time you will have to wait between shots.
It uses 2 AA batteries and they are handy, cheap and I never have to worry about forgetting to charge the batteries, (remember I want something that is ALWAYS handy and ready). This camera is very light even when the batteries are in, but it feels more substantial in my hand than the fujifilm or the sony or the samsung did, they feel “pastic-y”. I like the red color it is rich looking, I like the 3 inch viewing screen, but I hate not having a viewfinder (that is just something I am used to and will have to learn to work with) . On the plus side I can wear glasses and still take great photos. I like the one touch switch over to video, but admittedly I will probably never use the video feature. The menu and shooting modes are easy to navigate, it is very simple to change from portrait to landscape to museum and back to auto. I never even took out the instructions and I was taking photos in less than 3 minutes after opening the box. Hard to beat a 16 MP camera for $99. If you find a better one let me know I will take this one back and buy it.
What I do NOT like about this camera: blurred and distorted photos when using the zoom. In order to get a good photo I have to zoom slowly and if I edit on screen before transferring to iPhoto, it seems to minimize the blurring.
Indoor shots are a little disappointing unless you have time to snap, look at it to be sure, and re-take shots, in other words take several shots and try different modes I would say that 6 out of 10 indoor shots are usable.
If you expect to take “spontaneous” snap shots quickly to catch first steps for example I am not entirely confident you will get them. The lag time is a MAJOR dislike for me, by the time It focuses and flashes my subject has moved.
I was able to edit most pictures and they looked fine on Facebook once posted. Could I blow these up to a 24X36 and hang it on my wall? probably not it would look blurred.
Bottom line this camera performs as expected for a basic point and shoot. I think most people who take pictures for fun, or to share with friends and family, or like me to have something acceptable for Facebook type images, you would be happy with it. If you are looking for WOW, AMAZING, PROFESSIONAL photos this is not the camera for you. I think that Fuji Finepix T400 camera with the 16MP and he 40X Zoom would blow this one away, but it is $459 so I would expect it to be better than this one.

Good thing I found the Lightdow LD6000 1080P HD Wifi Sports Action Camera ($69-Amazon Lightening Deal) before I bought a GoPro Hero 4 silver ($399) to replace my older GoPro Hero 3 silver)
For me, the LD6000 is more than “good enough” for my application(s)
I will cut to the chase
o Good enough for most action cam applications at this price point.
o Comes with lots of accessories. (More than GoPro)
o All your existing GoPro accessories will fit
o Has 4x digital zoom (not on GoPro)
o Has dash-cam mode (start with external power applied; stop when power remove) (not on GoPro)
o Has Anti-shake (not on GoPro)
o Has motion detect (not on GoPro)
o Bright display easy to read in sunlight
o The Android application (YouMera) works great (get it from Google Play store)
o Additional batteries are inexpensive ($17 for 2 including charger)
o Video quality as good as my GoPro Hero 3 Silver (1080p)
o No true “skeleton” case (see below)
o Audio not that great in protective case (even using the alternate back) (would be improved with true Skeleton case – see below)
o No ability to use an external Mic (GoPro has this)
o User manual is bad and incomplete
o Download of the application is via a QR code on the manual which sends you to a raw IP address and an APK that won’t download and seems very dangerous. (Get rid of that and just point us to the Android and Apple Stores – app is free)
o Has HDR but no real info on how to use it. (bad manual)
o Won’t take anything larger than 32GB card (kinda OK since 32GB will get you 5hrs 1080p recording)
How to make it better
o Have a true “skeleton case” that would allow access to the USB port, HDMI port, and better expose the built-in microphone. GoPro has this. In my application (Motorcycle) I would like to apply external power AND have the camera somewhat protected. So, what I will do is drill the case to allow access. In dash cam mode, this would also allow some protection for the camera, especially the lens.
o Add a lens cap (of some sort) to the “kit”
o Add the ability to use an external Microphone (GoPro has this)
For Lightdow
There are some tiny things you could do that would make the user experience so much better at minimal cost to you.
o Have a real web site. Put the firmware there… and any updates. Put a full manual there in a font that people can read and is complete.
o Get rid of that funky QR code on the manual to get the software at some non-DNS address.
Bottom line, Do the math. GoPro clone at the $80 price point.
This camera, inside, is really a SJ7000 – branded “Lightdow”.
I buy off brand stuff all the time. This was no exception. 80 bucks. How can you beat it? Well its from China. No worries. Everything is made in China. Its a knock off of a GoPro. I bought it yesterday. Got it the next day for the extra shipping. I have played with it all day at work. The app works well. Just search for SJCam in the play store if you use android. No idea what to search for on Iphone. The wifi works well. I set it in the front office and could view the camera from about 20 feet threw 2 walls on my phone. The case and everything looks well made. The camera itself is light but all electronics are light now. Its motion sensitive and will start recording on charging and stop on no charge. So you could put it in your car and it will start recording when you start the car if it is plugged in. I got like 5 hours of record time with a 32g mini sd card. It did come with a bunch of accessories for attaching it to things. IT DOES NOT COME WITH AN MICRO SD CARD. Also the language at start up is Chinese. You can switch it. Just look for the bubble in settings that has ABC. For the price I already love it. I dunked it into water in the bathroom and it did fine. Heading to the river and am going to give it a good test this weekend. Will update it then. So far I would recommend it. Also if you all want to sent me some free stuff for a review….SEND IT.
I just received my Lightdow wi-fi cam the other day, after UPS lost the first one. Amazon Prime came through for me immediately, authorizing a new shipment and upgrading to next day delivery!
I have one of the second generation GoPro Hero’s for comparison – and there is much similarity between the two – except that the Lightdow is far more integrated. I had to buy a separate back to upgrade my original GoPro to enable wi-fi and remote/Smartphone operation. Then it required yet another accessory purchase to put an LCD back on the cam; and of course you can’t do wi-fi and LCD at the same time. The Lightdow has both of these features integrated, and you don’t need several new waterproof case backs to make all the different camera backs work.
The camera does rattle about a bit in the case – easily fixed with a thin shim, and will likely use some moisture-detecting paper to do that, just to be able to see if the waterproof case leaks. You’ll definitely want to prevent rattles, which can become really overpowering on recorded video.
The menus are pretty self-explanatory, which is good, because the manual is pretty minimal. If you’re a total novice to digital video, some of the controls may be a bit esoteric, but if you already have familiarity with settings for resolution, white balance, and the like, you won’t need extensive descriptions in the user guide. BTW – the user guide text is tiny, particularly to my progressive-lens enhanced eyeballs. I’m going to find an online manual so I can increase text size and actually read it, rather than squinting! On the plus side, the Chinese did save a few trees by publishing this micro sized guide.
Resolution and picture quality are fine, especially when I consider that I got this for $69 on a Prime deal. Where I might have had some qualms about mounting my expensive GoPro, I won’t think twice about this one, for example, a rocks-eye view of 4-wheeling with my Jeep, or similar low views from my mountain bike or dirt bike.
I also like the motion detection features. My wife and I have caught glimpses of flying squirrels at our home, and think they feed at our feeder at night, but seldom see them. With motion detection, we’re hoping to catch the culprits at the feed tray! This from a much more versatile platform than a dedicated and expensive game camera.
In addition to the camera, Lightdow includes a fair number of accessories that would be extra on a GoPro. These appear to be similar in quality and generally interchangeable with the GoPro stuff, so if you already have mounts stuck to helmets, etc. these should work with either system.
I haven’t yet put the camera to the test in filming in difficult conditions – I suspect that the latest GoPro units do a better job, But with built-in settings for things like HDR (High Dynamic Range), this inexpensive little box seems to have a lot of the features to make high-quality image capture not only possible, but easy.

When I got the package, it wasn’t in an official box. Just those bubble-wrap lined yellow packaging bags. Kinda made me concerned if the item is what I ordered or it is fine. When I opened the bag I found the camera, no damage found. Thankfully.
Plugged it in my computer, installed the driver successfully then it needed it’s software.

So here’s where the problem begins:

This webcam does not like webcam softwares (Windows Lifecam and Cyberlink). Not even it’s own (Windows Lifecam). Perhaps it might record better in using said programs, but it starts doing weird things. Such as the pitch in the audio goes down, video speeds up or slows down and sometimes it stops recording and includes the length of how long it is on. So a pseudorecording we can call it? Very strange things. However, the webcam still holds 720p. Auto-focus is a little annoying but if you know how to make it focus by moving around or shining a light on it, it’s okay.

Best software I used with it: Windows Live Moviemaker.

With Moviemaker, I did not get the same problems as I did with the other programs. So that’s better for recording with the webcam.

You can move the webcam around in a 360 angle, move it and set it down wherever you want as long it remains connected to the computer. OH! Also the cord has this little doo-hicky that helps you keep the cord in place so you don’t get a tangled mess. That’s a plus right thar! 😀

Microphone is great. Keeps most sound out and compared to most built-in webcams (My computer is a Compaq Presario CQ57 by the way.) the recorded sound is a hell of a lot more crisper.

Every time the webcam is in use, a blue light comes out from the bottom of the lens. Don’t worry, won’t get recorded unless you hold a mirror to it.

Aluminum body is a plus, so that it doesn’t get damaged as easily.

Overall: Great, if nothing else suits your fancy.

I needed a fairly cheap webcam, and after doing a little research, this is actually a very good unit and for the price, it won’t be beat.

Quite often, it will not allow video at 720p at more than 15fps, based on what Microsoft decides is acceptable for your hardware, but it is possible to record at 30fps at 720p with moderate hardware and the right codec.

Where this webcam really shines though is at slightly lower resolutions. The overall picture quality at lower resolutions will not be beat without spending a lot more money.

Also, the mic in this camera is great. I got rid of my desktop microphone — there is absolutely no comparison in volume or clarity between the two.

The Microsoft LifeCam Cinema is a excellent starter camera for those aspiring to do small room webcasts, or Skyping sessions. The 720p resolution, and the TrueColor features make this camera stand out beyond most other brands and types in the 720p range. The Ups for this camera is that once you plug it into your computer (PC/MAC) it works. Albeit the Driver Installation on a Windows PC will automatically detect/download/install the correct drivers. And you can seemlessly start working with it immediately.

The bad news is if you have more than One LifeCam (Studio/Cinema) on the same machine you will quickly discover you can’t run two at the same time. You will have to trial and error your situation if you choose to use more than One Microsoft LifeCam per machine.

I use TeleStream WireCast (4.3) and I still have trouble using a Studio and Cinema camera at the same time. Partly because these types of Webcams will utilize your USB Bus Bandwidth, so a solution to this problem is to add an additional USB Bus by a new USB PCI/PCI-Express expansion.

Now in most end-user cases, you probably will only need one camera. If you like the LifeCam and want to use more than one at a time, you will find yourself in a lucky or unlucky category. The Lucky ones, have computers with high end USB Controllers (therefore CAN use more than one LifeCam) most don’t have that luck.

The Mic on this camera is awesome, it captures my webcasting voice from distances and close up volcume control automatically.

The Auto Focus is very stable when attempting close ups to electrical components. You can control the focus, and use Digital Zoom as well.
Good clear picture, you have to get the actual software/drivers from microsoft’s website(if gives you a card in the box for the address). I turned off the autofocus and just manually adjust it via the software(once you set it you’re good until you move a few feet further away or closer to the cam), otherwise if you do a lot of moving then stop, it’ll go blurry then readjust the focus, which then gets it crystal clear again, that’s the only reason i give 4 stars instead of 5, it gets annoying with the constant refocusing when you move then stop. the microphone will literally pick up on a pin dropping. incredibly sensitive. there’s settings in the software to manually adjust everything with the cam(color, brightness, contrast, white levels, etc.) with lots of little extras too, but i haven’t toyed with those much. 4/5 for the constant refocusing(until you turn off autofocus in software’s settings) otherwise good product.

This is a wonderful webcam. Many users seem to have had trouble with this or have had complaints about the image quality so I decided to make a video review with this camera to show you how well it does work. The Camera looks toy-ish in the picture, but it does not feel cheap at all. I am very happy with this webcam, and it is great for the 7.00 price tag. By the way, when Put the border around the picture with the German flag colors in the corner, I am saying I speak German (Ich spreche deutsch). The programs I mentioned are both free, and are called Debut Video Capture Software and ManyCam. I hope the video itself will put to rest any concerns you have about image quality and compatibility, at least with Windows Vista.

This is a great little USB web cam for very little money. When testing a dozen or so different web cams, I found this the easiest to use and the least expensive.
This cam does not come with software, and does not have fancy features like zoom, autofocus, and subject tracking. It is fixed focal length and focus, like a cheap still camera.
I found the lack of software to be a plus, as most all webcam software borders on being malware with its invasive and obnoxious effects on Windows. I have not tried it with Linux yet, but will update this review when I do.
This camera worked out of the box on standard Windows camera drivers, and for simple web conferencing, it is great. I have used it with the Elluminate service, and it functions quite adequately.
If you need a basic, generic, USB webcam and don’t want to shell out nearly $100 for a good one, give this beastie a try. It isn’t fancy, but it works.
I have also now tried this camera on the MSI Wind Barebone computer running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. It works well with Linux, too.
I bought two of these Webcams – one for my folks and one for me so that I could walk them through the setup. The camera was easy to install. I use the webcam with Skype and find the video quality and voice quality excellent. I do not have to sit up close to the mic to have it pick my voice up – on the contrary, I find myself turning the mic down. I was able to walk my folks through the installation of the webcam on their PC and skype and they love it. My only issue is that in order to have my folks see me as if I was looking at them, I need to position the camera in the middle of my monitor which creates an obstacle for my own viewing. In this regard, I recommend a webcam that can be placed at the top of your monitor and not on your desk.

The term ‘webcam’ doesn’t quite do it justice.
I haven’t used this beyond a day and I normally wait awhile to write a review but I wanted to get this up here now since there seems to be some confusion about this working with Mac Computers. This camera works without the driver automatically within the apps of Skype and Facetime if you select the C525 cam and mic in the Preferences of those programs. But what you really want to do is go online and download a driver since with it the quality isn’t that good as most of that is managed by the driver. Even though the C525 doesn’t have a driver download on it’s product page, the drivers for Logitech’s webcams are interchangeable so you can go to […] then click on Webcams, then click on the model HD Webcam C615, select your Mac OS operating system and download the driver.
Once it downloads you just double click it open, install, and double click the App Logitech Icon and you will see the light come on the camera. You can record from the software that will display once this app is open then import it into iMovie and edit as usual. Unfortunately you can’t select this camera for recording directly with iMovie but I don’t mind the extra step. I believe if you were using this camera with a PC you would have a lot more options to use within the logitech software such as uploading directly to YouTube and other recording adjustments so I hope that logitech will be updating the Mac software soon but with the limits to Mac options at this price point this camera is worth it. If your computer screen is on while shooting then you will definitely be lit enough for things like Skype and Facetime but if you are shooting something for YouTube and you want a more natural light I dim the computer screen down half way to get rid of the blue cast on the wall behind me and use a few daylight lamps and it turns out great. With the options out now I love this new camera since…
– It is definitely a better quality pic at 720dpi
– Doesn’t lag
– Voice and picture sync well
– Fold’s up nicely to travel in my bag
– Sound is great for a Webcam Mic and I think a bit better than the Macbook Pro Mich
– You can choose which Mic to use as you record with the Logitech recording software so if I want to use a different Mic I can
– Best inexpensive Webcam out there in my opinion for Mac users right now
Hope this review clears things up and helps people get their cameras working with Macs 🙂
The logitech HD webcam c525 is a great quality webcam at a very affordable price. I have enjoyed using it, learning the different features, and playing around with options. The webcam is very easy to use, plug it in, hang the camera on your Monitor and have fun! Highly recommended.
*edited to add, I’ve been having a lot of fun with my webcam, making videos and spamming friends and family:) The controls are easy to use and adjust. We actually did send my mom the other camera, and my son walked her through it. I was right, it was so easy even she could use it! We are now on Skype and the quality for what we want, being able to talk “face to face” is great.
Any out of focus issues are mine, later video shot with the webcam are much better but I wanted to do my first impression video, warts and all, to give a good sample of someone totally non-tech using and enjoying the webcam.

I got this for my desktop that doesn’t have a camera because I needed to use Skype at home. The camera is small and easily fits on top of my monitor. The attachment is loose so it doesn’t damage the top of the monitor and it will fit a pretty deep unit. The lead is long enough to reach from top of a big monitor to the back of case and the cable is pretty light which prevents lead drag.
On connection windows (I use windows 7) downloads the software for you and it includes a decent range of functions useful and silly. (I do like the pink hair and dark glasses option!) Setup is very easy and Skype instantly recognized the camera and asked me to set it up which was also very easy and intuitive. (there is also a zoom function in Skype). It is in focus from about 6 inches to infinity so autofocus is not necessary.
Quality is good enough, the unit copes with low light well and can run in 720 HD mode but it seems to perform better at 800×600 mode. The video in either case is stutter free on record and the microphone is actually quite good. Although there is little in the way of noise suppression, Skype seem to do that because the sound quality on testing was better than on just record and playback mode.
Sound volume is good. I sit about 4ft from the screen and the volume and quality is still excellent.
I was very pleased to find the mount is flexible and weighted so I don’t have to stick this thing to the monitor. The mount is very bendy, I would call it the Gumby mount. Plug and play with Windows 7. There are a lot of special effects which are really goofy, like a house of mirrors, hats on your head, stars above your head, question marks, light bulb, etc., so your young kids will probably get a kick out of that. Only one that looked useful to me was the B&W mode at the push of a mouse button. Easy to adjust, has telephoto and pans and tilts slightly when in telephoto mode. Record features, Blue light on unit when it is on and working. For the price, I am quite happy with it.
The product arrived in one of those oh-so-much-fun clamshells. You know the kind, the type that takes 15 minutes and two fingers as well to properly open for all the parts. After paying my dues, the camera was attached to my cousin’s monitor via the bendable stand foot and camera lip (see picture) and plugged into a USB port. After going through the standard new hardware detected routine, we were ready to go. Using Skype as the connectivity to another computer, the picture was great. Looks good, tastes great. Get one.

This camera is worth buying in this price range for people who generally use Windows Live products (messenger, etc) and normally do basic web cam sessions with a resolution no greater than 640 x 480. If you’d like to do full screen video using other software like Skype, you’ll want to get a higher end Microsoft camera or something like the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 (my favorite). I’ve been using the Quickcam Pro 9000 for the past year and have really liked it, however, it seems to be at least double the price of this MS camera. One downside to this Microsoft camera is that the microphone can be a bit faint and the sound can be a bit off. That said, unless you have high expectations for crystal clear web cam chats, then I can certainly recommend this camera for people mainly interested in ease of use with Windows Live Messenger and other Instant Messaging programs. It was easy to install and is extremely easy to use. I recorded this video in 320×240 resolution using the included software. Thanks and have fun shopping!
Microsoft’s LifeCam VX-5000 is a good all around webcam at a reasonable price. While some of the features are improvements, this is not the highest end model you can get and not even the top of the line in Microsoft’s line-up. You may have to do some more research and demanding users will want to step up. But for those that are looking for the best bang for their buck, this model should definitely be in the running.
+ Good Price for basic webcam
+ The flexible base is probably the best design out there for working with a variety of monitors, including laptops, flat screens and traditional monitors
+ The included software is very easy for non-techies to install and configure using simple buttons
+ Ability to zoom, pan and tilt are nice, though now standard, extras
+ Easy settings also allow for easy video effects
+ Advanced features are just a click away, allowing customized settings
+ For those who want to do IM and chat, this seems to be tightly integrated with those applications and Windows Live
+ Integrated Microphone is a nice feature and one less thing for your desk
+ Nice indicator light alerts you to when webcam is capturing
+ The options to take a snapshot, record video or record sound are nice and useful for basic multimedia stuff
+ Nice range of model accent colors: i.e. Blue, Green and Red
– Video quality perhaps not good enough for professional (work) use yet
– The video capture (listed at 30 frames per second) still seems to perform too slowly to capture fast movement (try waving your hand)
– The microphone sensitivity is average and the camera must be directed at you for it to capture sound adequately
– The highly touted low light performance and auto-adjustment works slowly and not as well as the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000
– The software installation includes too much scumware, adware and software for chatting and other things you may not want; just more stuff to remove
– The 640 X 480 video resolution does not easily scale to full screen and won’t satisfy demanding users
Comparing Against The Alternatives
Yep, despite some strong points, this guy still has a lot of cons. If you are a basic user many of those cons will be irrelevant in light of the excellent price. Most of my main points are highlighted in the pros and cons. But there are a few points that need emphasis.
The Microsoft LifeCam VX-7000 offers a *true* 2.0 megapixel sensor, while this guy only gives you 1.3 megapixels, and those are interpolated which basically means they are not based on the direct sensor but are *enhanced* from the VGA resolution that is captured by the camera. So one would expect the VX7000 to capture video better. Similarly, the Microsoft LifeCam NX-6000 captures high definition video at twice the video resolution. Either of those might be options, but each at slightly higher price tags.
If you really want a very clear picture and don’t mind spending twice as much, then the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 is worth looking into. It definitely has a better auto-adjustment feature than the VX-5000 and also sports Zeiss optics for those that are into that. The Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF is another high end camera that also has some auto-focus features at a higher price tag, around $100. Do your research depending upon your needs.
While it’s not really a con, all three versions of the VX-5000 camera that I’ve seen look black. The accent color is not very noticeable. So my advice is to just get the cheapest one. They are selling at different prices and the prices fluctuate so you will definitely want to watch them carefully.
If you need an inexpensive webcam and don’t need high definition video, this unit is one of the best options. More demanding users should step up to higher end Logitech and Creative units.
